July 14 | Say What You Mean: Listening To and Through Character with Zach Scalzo
We’ve all been there. We’ve got the plot, the characters are interesting and unique… but they just won’t talk right! Voice—the use of dialogue, narration, and authorial style—is a tricky balance no matter the project, but don’t worry. We’re here to help you through it!
In this workshop, we’ll explore how key concepts in playwriting can help us examine character and voice in any writing project. Geared towards writers of all kinds of genre and experience, bring along a project you’re looking to edit, or be ready to dive into a brand-new character and situation through our exercises!
Zachary Scalzo (he/they) is a queer writer, translator, and theatremaker. He was the Artist in Residence at UCO’s English department from 2022-2025 and is currently the President of the LP Writer’s Co-Op. They can be found at azachofalltrades.com, on Instagram at @zjscalzo, and on most major podcasting platforms with his co-host Derek on Two-Player Theory. Their poetry has appeared in journals including Dear Poetry, Ghost City Review, and & Change, and he is one of the founding members of the theatrical collaboration Whatever Works.
